of Goddess Hadimba, built in 1553 A.D., situated in cedar forest and then
drive to old Manali along the Beas river to spring of Vashist.

Today we leave Manali towards Rothang Pass, through mixed forest, past the
last village. Situated about 50 km from Manali town, at an altitude of 4,
111 mtrs. on the highway to Keylong. This is the only pass which provides
the access to the Lahaul Valley. Camp below the pass, on 3,000 mts..
DAY 06 - Rohtang Pass - Tandi (72 kms.)
Through green alpine meadows, the road is winding up to the pass of 3, 960
mts. If monsoon permits, we should have a spectacular panoramic view. To the
north one can see the glaciers of Lahul & Spiti as well as the barren
mountains of Ladakh; to the south the green woods of Kullu valley. We enjoy
the 1,000mts. descent to the village Khoksar, passing green meadows where
the Gaddis grazing their sheeps, goats & cows. Bike along the Chandra
river we reach Tandi, today's camp. Situated at the junction of the rivers
Chandra and Bhaga, now called river of Chenab.
DAY 07 - Tandi - Keylong - Jispa(37 kms)

Monasteries in the vicinity of this former capital of Lahul. In the afternoon
we have to strain our calf muscles again to reach our camps at Jispa.
DAY 08 - Jispa - Darcha - Paseto
Past Darcha with its great river landscape (here the Zanskar trek starts),
we reach Pasteo. It is only a short day, however, the last possibility to
further acclimatize.
DAY 09 - Paseto - Barachala Pass(80 kms.)
The Baralacha Pass, our first key point on the tour, is ahead of us. We have
to cover 4,392 mts. today; an ascent of 1,400 mts. has to be vanquished. The
landscape around us turns more barren having passed the tree line. The pass
is junction of two caravan routes and the end of our crossroad. Three rivers
rise on this flat pass, Chandre, Bhaga and one of the source river of Zanskar,
flowing north to the Indus, which we will follow now. An exciting descent
via Sarchu, the border to Ladakh. It took us 80 Kms. To this camp.
DAY 10 - Baralacha Pass - Nikli Pass - Pang(78 kms.)
Narrow winding road leads us to Nikli pass (5,050 mts.), continuing down alpine-like
valley. On the pass many stone manis remind of past caravans. Crossing the
flat high altitude valley we reach the 5,065 mts. high Lachulung-La. We cycle
down into a bizarre gorge until we reach Pang at the second tributary of the
river Zanskar called Zara Chu- river. Our camp will be here on 4,500 mts.
DAY 11 - Pang - Rupshu
A small ascent we have to overcome to reach the more plane, being on 4,700
mts., a dry high altitude desert, typical for the arid Rupshu. Only Changpa
nomads are living here with their yaks, goats and sheeps, grazing at an altitude
up to 5,600 mts. We see their tents from yak hair or we meet them while they
change their grazing grounds hidden in the bends of this oversized hilly landscape,
only on the tops covered with snow. The Changpa nomads still transport the
salt by using their goats to all corners of Ladakh. The lake on Tsokar has
no discharge, however, the connection to another small lake feeds it with
fresh water. This is the native place of the almost extinct Kyang, the wild
Donkey formerly populating the highland of the Rupshu & Tschangthang.
Also geese as well as the Tibetan laughing gull are living here. The lake
is a few kilometers from our camp.
DAY 12 - Rupshu - River Gya(92 kms.)
We are now only separated from the Indus valley by the Taglang-La (5,303 mts.).
Starting in Debling (4,800mts.), the road reaches the pass, sees as a thin
at the mountain slope. The daring bends of the old caravan path follows us
alongside, which are boarded by Chorten and Mani walls. The ascent is easy.
After 3 hours we are rewarded with a gorgeous view of the mountain range to
the north, the Karakourm & the descending road down to the Indus valley.
We cycle downhill for 50 Kms. Our camp is in the romantic narrow gorge, dug
by the river Gya after the longest stage of 92 Kms.
DAY 13 - River Gya - Hemis Monastery
The narrow Gya gorge releases us towards the vast Indus valley, cross the
river, Tibetan & Ladakhis call "Singhi-Chu", rising from the
muzzle of the lion near the distant holy mountain Kailash. Cross the Indus
and reach the Hemis monastery via another steep ascent of 30 Kms., hidden
in the mountain valley famous for mysterious mark dances to visit today. The
camp will be close the monastery.
DAY 14 - Hemis Monsatery - Leh(44 kms.)
The last stage of 44 Kms. To Leh: We cycle through the Indus valley with its
green fields, willows and poplars, suspended by desert of sand and rubble
and white washed Chorten enclosures, towards the most typical Ladakhi monastery
of Tikse. It overlooks the vast plan of the Indus valley & the view from
the roof of monastery is impressive. Past Shey, the old capital of Ladakh,
with the previous residence of the Royal family and the stone relieves of
the 5 Dhyani Buddha's we last not least we arrive in Leh (3,500mts.).
DAY 15 - Leh
Morning is for resting. Around lunch we meet for sightseeing of Leh and the
immediate vicinity on foot. Cameras not to be forgotten for the fantastic
view from the fortress of Namgial Tsemo to the snow covered Stok Kangri range
beyond the desert like Indus valley.
DAY 16 - Leh - Khardung la - Leh
Today we conquer the 5,602 mts. high Khardung La. Considering the past training.
This pass should not be too tough. We will have to power for 4-5 hours in
the thin air and will eventually be rewarded richly not only by the view but
also by the fact that this is the highest point one can reach on wheels. The
Kef experienced by the descent 40 Kms and 2,000 mts. in the altitude will
be unforgettable adventure.
