to take our first look at the Ganges. Rishikesh lies a few kilometers further
on, below the imposing range of the Himalayan mountains. This easy-going town
is a famous centre for studying Hindu religion and contains several interesting
temples and ashrams.
Our base camp, Leopard Beach, is situated near the village of Shivpuri, 16
kilometers from Rishikesh, overlooking the sacred Ganges, where we arrive

Day 5 Tehri and the Bhagirathi river
This morning we set out early for the drive to the put-in point at Tehri.
The road winds along narrow valleys, until it reaches the village of Chamba
at 6, 500 feet above sea level. From here the road drops down to the river
valley and into the town of Tehri. The boats will be set up and we embark
on the river for the main journey south to Shivpuri. The first kilometer is
somewhat placid but soon picks up in intensity as we approach 'Sanawar' rapid,
followed by three rapids in quick succession. After three more grade III rapids,
we reach two longer pieces of white water, known as the 'Village' and the
'Deer' runs. Camp for the evening on a sandy bank by the river.
Day 6 Nagar village
Today we continue on towards the village of Nagar. After lunch we enter one
of the most exciting stretches on the river, where there is seldom a break
between the rapids. Since many of the rapids on this section are unnamed,
it will be the prerogative of expedition members to christen them. Camp is
made on a large sandy bank with a supe
rb
view down the river valley towards the village.
Day 7 "The Fall"
After breakfast we resume our journey through more challenging rapids until
the early afternoon when a reconnaissance stop is necessary to scout one of
the most difficult rapids of our de- scent. Known as 'the Fall', the river
narrows at the head and then drops twelve feet into a raging torrent before
pooling out. The rapid is taken by running a small chute, barely as wide as
the raft, close to the left bank.
Day 8 Devprayag - Kaudiyala
An hour after setting out this morning, we stop above the Devprayag rapid
(grade IV) to see what we are about to face. This small holiest of towns sits
above the river and the people gather along the roadside to watch as we head
into the white water, just above the confluence with the Alaknanda river.
Before lunch there is an opportunity to spend an hour or so getting to know
this pleasant town and its temples. The river now widens out and is relatively
calm for the next fifteen kilometres until we reach grade II rapids near the
village of Kaudiyala, followed by a tough grade III rapid known as 'Daniel's
Dip'. Camp is set at the beach below Kaudiyala for dinner and camp.
Day 9 "The Wall"
The morning session includes the second most difficult rapid of our journey,
a grade IV zig-zag stretch called 'The Wall' and named after the huge canyon
wall facing the left bank. The boats must manoeuvre from one side of the river
to the other in order to avoid a menacing hole in the middle. The river then
slows to a more leisurely pace, leading to our lunch stop at the small village
of Malagunti where we can take a short walk to see the stalagtites in a nearby
cave before lunch. Our last hour of rafting excitement bring us back to the
base camp at Shivpuri, after passing through a gentle stretch and the final
rapids known as 'Three Blind Mice' and 'Crossfire'. We return to the base
camp for a celebration dinner around the open fire.
Day 10 "The Biggies"
In the morning we will have an opportunity to run two more exciting rapids
called the 'Rollercoaster' and 'Golf Course' with their enormous waves. Overnight
at LeopardBeach.
